DIY Pest Control?

I noticed a lot of ants (I'm not sure the kind, maybe carpenter?) in a kitchen cupboard. Before I call in a professional pest control company, I thought I would try a DIY solution. I've heard that there are some spices that act like an insect repellent. Cayanne pepper, I believe, is the most popular.

Has anyone tried this? Does it work?

Very useful directory for finding good services! I found a pest control company in the GTA area and they were really good and affordable. The only drawback is the directory seems new because there isn't too many companies listed yet but love the set up. Will definitely use again to find other services in the future.
